It's November, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Our hearts and homes begin to resonate with gratitude and warmth. Thoughts of family, and, of course, the foods we traditionally prepare during this time evoke cozy, nostalgic feelings. What better way to embrace the spirit than by embarking on a creative journey that intertwines the essence of the season witht he artistry of quilting? Picture this: a quilt inspired by the charm of a homemade apple pie.
Let's explore crafting and culinary delights and delve into some sumptuous treats! We shall begin our journey with the Apple Pie Block.
Why apple pie? Glad you asked, here are some reasons:
1. It's delicious. Especially my Mom's. My daughter asks for it on her birthday instead of birthday cake. Ohhh with a little bit of milk or vanilla ice cream...
2. It's fall and the apples are at their peak. We are only a short drive away from Western North Carolina's beautiful apple country. I will stand in line in the rain for a basket of Winesaps and an apple cider donut. And if there's one thing I hate, it's standing in line.
3. Apples are a symbol of the autumn and the harvest. Many fall traditions involve apples, one of which is the classic Bobbing for Apples game. Did you know that in the Victorian days, young men would write their names on the apples and the ladies would bob for them - then take them home and put the apple under their pillow so they'd dream of their future husbands. Sounds very romantic, but I imagine that there were some pretty sticky pillowcases back in the day.
This block is a nine-patch using three 4 1/2 inch blocks in a top, middle, and bottom row to finish out at 12 1/2 inches, 12 inches in the finished quilt top\. There is one solid block in the center, surrounded on four sides by a two-patch, and cornered with two flying geese. This is a simple block that can really look dramatic when used in different orientations.
The red in the center really makes the block pop. Here is what it looks like in a simple horizontal layout:
Look at that secondary block design! A Dutchman's puzzle! How cool is that? Let's see what it looks like with sashing:
White Sashing, black cornerstones...
Black sashing, white cornerstones...
I like it!!!
But wait....let's go crazy and put it ON POINT
DON'T STOP ME NOW!!!!
No sashing...
White sashing with black cornerstones...
Black sashing with white cornerstones...
Which do you like best? I am drawn to the on-point ones, especially those with the black sashing.
I'm going to try this out with some saturated autumn colors - maybe even some borders and applique. I'll keep. you posted on the progress!
